CREATING FALSE STEREOTYPES
On the basis of the film 'Polish Wedding'.
'Polish Wedding' is a combination of a classical Hollywood romance with some action. It's a story about a proud, charming and hard working Polish-American family from Detroit. The Americans say that it is not only a personal love-letter but a funny and touching family drama. 'Polish Wedding' is the first movie written and directed by Theresa Connelly, who comes from the working class.

When ‘Polish Wedding’ was released, it was taken by people as a nice story about a typical Polish family. The Poles didn’t like the idea of creating new and at the same time false stereotypes about their nation - the film presents the Poles as primitive, vulgar and backward people whose favourite meals are pickled, cucumbers, ‘czernina’ (soup of goose’s blood) and vodka. Jadwiga, one of the main characters in the film, is a toilet cleaner by profession whereas her husband, a nice idiot, performs the job of a baker and that is why he is placed high in the social ladder.

(a matriarch who controls the family)
